Ao primeiro contacto, numa antiga sede militar do exército jugoslavo tornado centro de artes e cultura de Ljubljana, sabíamos estar perante algo especial.
Cabem muitos mundos no universo musical da italiana Leila Gharib, um lugar alternadamente compenetrante, desconcertante, inebriante, abrasivo, enternecedor, e, por vezes, tudo isso ao mesmo tempo – tão expansivo quanto o alcance da sua imaginação.
O título do seu disco, Parabolabandit (2017), diz tudo: como uma antena retransmissora de sinais, apropria-se livremente de tudo entre o psicadelismo dos anos 60 e o neo-psicadelismo dos 2000, passando pelo dream pop, o IDM ou a pop eletrónica contemporânea.
Os seus temas são tão multifacetados que julgaríamos tratar-se de artistas completamente diferentes, não fosse pelas suas marcas de assinatura: os sintetizadores férteis, as coreografias elaboradas, a voz embebida em efeitos e uma vontade transversal de subverter as expectativas da pop, sem prescindir do seu característico sabor açucarado.

Sob a premissa de um continente europeu sem fronteiras, o Liveurope vem unir o Musicbox a vinte outras salas europeias, de Oslo a Barcelona à Tessalónica, no propósito comum de promover os EENNA (Emerging European Non-National Artists), músicos europeus estreantes vindos de países diferentes dos das salas que os acolhem, criando uma rede pan-europeia de difusão das novas frequências continentais. Ainda que a pandemia tenha interrompido a atividade destas salas, o Musicbox não quis que o distanciamento social causasse um curto-circuito a esta conexão entre artistas e público. Colmata-o, agora, com este catálogo de promessas da música europeia que deveriam ter passado pelo seu palco, e têm a vinda adiada ao regresso à normalidade.

In our first encounter at an old Yugoslavian military base turned culture & arts centre in Ljubljana, we knew we were in front of something special.
You can fit many worlds in the musical universe of Italian artist Leila Gharib, a place that is at turns attuning, bewildering, astounding, blasting, moving and, sometimes, is all at once – being as expansive as the range of her imagination.
The title of her album, Parabolabandit (2017), says it all: like a relay antenna, it freely hijacks everything between 60’s psychedelia and 00’s neo-psychedelia, passing through dream-pop, IDM or contemporary electronic pop.
Her songs are so versatile that we’d think they’re from completely different artists were it not for her signature marks: the rich synthesisers, the elaborate choreographies, the voice soaked in effects and an overall will of subverting pop expectations without sacrificing its distinctive sugary taste.

Under the premise of a European continent without borders, Liveurope brings together Musicbox and other twenty European music venues from Oslo to Barcelona to Thessaloniki with the common purpose of promoting EENNAs (Emerging European Non-National Artists), European musicians who are just starting and come from different countries than those of the venues receiving them, creating a pan-European network that diffuses the new continental frequencies. And even though the pandemic has interrupted the venues’ work, Musicbox didn’t want social distancing causing a shorting in this connection between artists and audiences. It tackles it, right now, with this catalog of the European music promises that should have played on its stage and saw their coming postponed to when life gets back to normal.
