Hania Rani is still young for a classical pianist, but she’s well ahead of her time when it comes to writing her own music and bringing it to life. She wears the weight of her pieces, where harmonic and rhythmic relations set the pace and tone for bleak, yet moving melodic endeavours. Her first full-length came out recently via Gondwana Records, label responsible for releasing records from Go Go Penguin and Portico Quartet, and where piano music is actually a must. Rani does stand out from her label peers with her sensitive interpretation of music, with each note and sustain being carefully placed over haunting chords, making “Esja” a deeply complex piece of classical music. The alias of singer Casper Clausen (Efterklang, Liima etc). In his studio in Cacilhas, across the river, Casper is working on his first solo project ever, after decades of work in the bands like Efterklang, Liima etc. The songwriting is still in progress, but Casper has chosen to accept and open his process to the public with a few special shows including this one. Driven by intuition and playfulness, he already performed several shows across Portugal, showcasing the new music in flux, while experimenting with the concert form in various directions, including performance and video. The music is balancing somewhere between sound collages and song-writing. Influenced by the hypnotism of Spacemen 3, the energy of John Maus and the poly-art form of Laurie Anderson i.e. Often guided by grooves in a krautrock direction, samples, field recordings, and of course accompanying his hypnotising vocal.
